Asset Tags Vs. RFID For Property ID Management is Much Ado About
Nothing
Cleveland,
OH - January, 31 - RFID Tags have become a hot topic since Wal-mart
and the Department of Defense (DoD) required their suppliers and
vendors to implement RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) into
warehouse asset tracking at the pallet and case level. But bar code
asset tags still dominate fixed asset tracking applications and
will remain the standard in property management. RFID is "much ado
about nothing" when it comes to managing fixed assets within the
enterprise.
For
fixed asset tracking, the costs to implement bar code asset tags
are minimal compared to RFID. Uses of the vastly more expensive
new technology require investment in RFID tags costing an average
of 35 to 50 cents each, RFID readers, software and staff training
for proper application and handling and will require upgrades as
the technology matures over the next 10 years. MetalPhoto® bar
code asset tags in 3 mil foil last the life of the property they
identify and represent a mature industry standard for asset tracking.
Corporations,
government agencies, utilities and universities require fixed asset
tracking of property for many reasons which can't justify RFID:
-
Identify owned assets quickly and easily
-
Track serial or model numbers efficiently
-
Simplify inventory with property ID tags
-
Track high value equipment such as laptops & PDA's
-
Increase security with regular monitoring
-
Reduction of theft with visual identification of assets
-
Monitor asset movement between locations
-
Compliance with insurance or government regulations
-
Track useful life of assets and depreciation schedules
-
Schedule maintenance and replacement of owned assets
3
mil Metalphoto® foil is the most durable and broadly used asset
label material. Asset tags graphics and bar codes are photographically
imaged below the surface, creating an impenetrable barrier to chemicals,
solvents, and salts, and these asset labels can survive in temperatures
up to 650° F. The highly visible silver-colored face stock makes
graphics easy to read. Foil also fractures if removed from its mating
surface, which provides tamper-evident features in a long lasting
durable finish. Foil asset tags work well in indoor or outdoor applications,
including industrial uses. Foil property ID tags have excellent
resistance to scuffing, cleaning solvents, most chemicals, and heat.
Service range is -40°F to +400°F. Outdoor exposure is up to
20 years.
